Zihuatanejo, Mexico is an outstanding place to target sailfish and roosterfish on
the fly. This sail was taken on a pink/white surface popper tube fly and a 14-weight rod. Hookless
teasers are trolled along the surface until the bill of the sailfish is seen chasing the teaser. Then,
the boat is put in neutral, the teaser is reeled close to the boat, and as the sail gets near the boat,
the teaser is yanked out of the water while you place the fly behind and to the side of the fish. As he
turns and takes the fly, the hook is set and the line is cleared. Then, hundreds of yards of backing
disappears in a tail-walking, reel screaming moment of madness.
