Steelhead
The Skykomish, Stilly and Skagit are starting to receive some winter steelhead and it's time to buddle up and start swinging those winter steelhead flies. The numbers of fish should build in the coming weeks but we're hearing of a few fish showing up in each system. The Olympic Peninsula has produced some good signs of early winter fish as well. Book your guided steelhead fly fishing day with Joe Ewing and you'll surely be casting over the fish.
Lakes
Not a whole lot of reports, but Lone lake has been good for a few anglers braving the cold. Fish leeches on sinking lines and fish them tight to the bottom with a slow retrieve or try fishing mico-leeches under an indicator. Pass Lake is usually fair this time of year, although we haven't had many reports. Shoot for days when it isn't too cold and the weather has been steady for a few days.
Saltwater
Winter fishing on Puget Sound can be really good in the south Sound this time of year for sea-run cutthroat. Some of Ben's favorite fishing takes place in the next two months so book your day with Ben for a great day on the Sound.
Rocky Ford
Take a weekend and head over to Rocky Ford when it isn't too crazy cold. Not many people and plenty of huge rainbows to keep you occupied throughout the day. Try stripping streamers in black, white and olive on a floating line or nymph fish little midge pupa, scuds, or tiny mayfly nymphs. Concentrate on the warmest part of the day and get some good gloves and ice off paste for your guides.
Yakima River
Typically December and January are pretty tough on the Yak but sometimes you just need to go. Concentrate on the warmer days and the warmest part of the day for your fishing. Drifting small stonefly nymphs in slower water or swinging streamers should be your number one options.
Fly Tying
It's a good time of year to fill those fly boxes back up. Come into PFF for a great selection of fly tying materials or take our upcoming fly tying class if you aren't tying your own flies yet. Sometimes your best fishing this time of year is a good fishing video, a cup of hot chocolate, and tying a couple dozen of your favorite flies.
